Volunteering at the Harvest Century Bicycle Ride

This afternoon I volunteered some time to inventory and then load up truck’s for tomorrow’s Harvest Century bicycle ride.  I signed up to volunteer about three years ago at the day of the event, but the day before was just horrible, stormy weather.  The ride was actually cancelled because conditions were so treacherous, and it was the right decision.  I was able to help out the following year, helping with early morning set up from 5am – 9am.  For my time, I was able to ride the 45-mile option that same day.  It was a great ride with lots of support and a fantastic route.

I was not able to ride last year due to another conflict, so I decided that I would ride this year, especially since my cousin Lordan was interested in riding with me.  Unfortunately he is not able to ride tomorrow, so I am on my own.  I will attempt the 75-mile route, starting early at 7:00am and hopefully finishing up before they tear down the finish line at 4pm.

The Harvest Century is a benefit for Community Vision, an organization that I volunteered at almost two years ago as a mentor for a high school student with special needs.  It is a great organization and this is their biggest fundraiser.  As such, it is a huge undertaking.  Just helping out this afternoon for a few hours was eye opening the amount of planning, logistics and people power it takes to put on an event of this magnitude.  With six rest stops plus the starting/finish line, there is an incredible amount of food, signage and volunteers needed to help support all the riders.  There are just so many details to keep track of, I was very impressed with the planning and organization that Axiom, the company that is organizing the ride, has undertaken and facilitated to its employees and volunteers.  There are big trucks to rent.  Big jugs of water needed.  Roving bike mechanics.  There needs to be enough food, and enough food variety.  Is there hand sanitizer?  Enough napkins?  Garbage bins?  Sun screen?  Plastic gloves, utensils, cutting boards, Gatorade mix, rest stop signs and directional arrows — the list goes on and on.  What a difficult and complex mission that must be handled!  Yes, I am blown away at all the energies and efforts and planning and staging it takes to put on this event — but one that is so worth it.  Tomorrow I get to ride the Harvest Century and I will thank the volunteers and riders and event organizers for being part of this great ride.  I just hope that I can survive my 75 miles on my bike that I haven’t ridden in two years!

Another Celebration with Extended Family

Tonight I attended the 18th birthday of my cousin’s grand daughter, Jhasmine.  Yeah, she spells it with an ‘h.’  There is usually some birthday party or celebration that occurs at least once every couple of weeks, and with all of my first cousins having kids and them having kids, the next generation and the next generation after that one becomes too much to keep track of!  And so I began to think — what do I call my cousin’s grand daughter as it relates to my bloodline?  Fortunately there is a web site that provides the answer with this handy ‘Cousins Chart.’  And so, after consulting the experts, I have come to the conclusion that I should call Jhasmine my first cousin twice removed.  But in the Filipino culture, she would simply be one of my many nieces and she would call me uncle, even though that is not technically correct.  At any rate, it is always a fun challenge to figure out who belongs to whom and what to call them (and what they should call me) whenever I go to one of my family gatherings.  Whew!

Interactive Museum of Gaming and Puzzelry (IMOGAP)

Lisa and I spent the evening at the Interactive Museum of Gaming and Puzzelry, which we discovered about a year ago.  The museum offers the largest publicly accessible collection of board games in the United States, with almost 4,500!  They are in danger of losing their lease, so they had a 24-hour Game-A-Thon for people to come in and play games.  We didn’t quite do 24 hours, but we did play for almost five hours and sampled a variety of games…

This was a fun and quick game to play. Basically it is a word search game and you use little buttons to cover each letter of the word you find. The first person to use all their buttons, wins. I got lucky and was able to snatch victory away from Lisa on my last turn.

Tsuro — easy to play and very quick, I’ll have to remember this one for future gaming

The last game we played was Trivia Pursuit — Lisa gave me questions from the Star Wars edition deck, while I gave her questions from the Book Lovers deck and from General Knowledge. Lisa gets the win at the end

We also played $20,000 Pyramid, a MASH trivia game, Word Yahtzee and this game…

This game didn’t live up to our expectations, as the game play was a bit clunky and we gave up after 30 minutes of playing.

Ah, the Weekend

Yay, the time after work on Friday until Sunday night.  Love it!  I can be productive or unproductive.  Active or lazy.  Out and about or indoors.  Or a combination of all of these things.  I love movies and the entertaining escapes that they provide.  But with so many movies out every weekend, it is hard to keep up.  Which is why sometimes I just like to crash on the couch on a Friday night and binge watch a whole bunch of them.  And so that’s what I did last night.  Complete with junk food like nachos (the entree), popcorn (the later side dish) and cookies (dessert!).  Up til midnight, then up this morning for some indoor basketball with my friends, followed by pigging out at the always high-quality (not) Hometown Buffet.  And now I’m back at home, relaxing on the couch, perhaps getting ready for another movie?  Or maybe just wandering and surfing the net.  Whatever I do, I totally just love this.  Ah, the Weekend.  Yay!

Club Sport Trial Offer

Took advantage of a free week of classes and great gym amenities at Club Sport in Tualatin.  Tonight is Taco Tuesday,  and I love tacos so naturally I had to get some.  The restaurant also offers $2 Tuesday smoothies,  which I also ordered after doing an hour of their Dance Fitness class.  Mmm, Mmm, yummy!
